The Diary of Anne Frank

Date: Thursday April 19, 2018 through Friday April 27, 2018.
Time: Times Vary
Location: The Culture House Stage & Studio at Oak Park Mall
Address: 11167 W 95th St Overland Park, KS 66214
Price: 14 at the door (11 plus tax and fee before the door)
Category: Arts / Exhibits
The Diary of Anne Frank is one of the most famous and haunting stories to emerge from the 20th Century. The memoirs of this young Jewish girl, forced to hide for nearly two years to escape Nazi persecution, are an essential part of how we remember one of the darkest periods of our human history. Wendy Kesselmans adaptation of the original, Pulitzer Prize award-winning script by Goodrich and Hackett draws from previously unpublished parts of Anne Franks real-life diary, allowing the audience to experience Anne in a way that breathes life into this passionate, complex young woman, allowing us to share her relatable experience of adolescence as a familiarly modern teenager. For nearly two years, Anne, her father, mother, and sister, joined with the Van Daan family, to hide in a secret annex space above her fathers former office in Amsterdam, as the Nazis deported the Jews of Holland to their deaths. In her secret attic, Anne comes of age: she laughs, plays, fights with her mother, and falls in love for the first time. In spite of her oppressive circumstances and the horrors that surround her, Annes spirit transcends, as she voices her belief, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart. Annes dynamism, her luminous spirit, and her story of resilience continue to resonate deeply, making her story as vital today as when her diary first was published. *Appropriate for ages 10 & up.

We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you!!

The 2018 March for Babies will highlight the strength of families affected by premature birth, birth defects and the loss of a child, celebrate the strides we've made towards accomplishing our mission and applaud the fundraising efforts of our donors. On Sunday, April 29, 2018, more than 8,000 individuals will come together at Paige Field to support the March of Dimes. Our goal is to raise a total of $550,000 for a healthier future for babies.

You raise money to expand programs and educate medical professionals to make sure that moms and babies get the best possible care. You advocate for policies that prioritize their health. You fund research to find solutions to the biggest health threats. And you support moms through every stage of the pregnancy journey, even when everything doesn't go according to plan.

March with us to lead the fight for the health of all moms and babies. Because when a society supports every family, we all win. When we come together, even the toughest problems can be solved.

Opening Ceremonies start at 11:00 a.m. - (Kids) Superhero Sprint begins at 10:00 a.m. - Walk begins at 11:15 a.m. Festival activities and award announcements continue until close at 1:00 p.m.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GOOD NEWS FROM ARTS IN PRISON REGARDING THE LANSING CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Instead of the endless headlines about overcrowding, staffing shortages and inmate unrest, this weeks news from the Lansing Correctional Facility is joyful, uplifting and focused on community benefit.

Arts in Prison announces the East Hill Singers concerts, Forever Let My Spirit Sing! on Sunday, April 29th and Sunday, May 6th.

The East Hill Singers is a mens choir consisting of inmates from the minimum-security unit at Lansing Correctional Facility and volunteer singers from the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. This choir, under the direction of Kirk Carson, has been performing inside and outside the prison walls for 20 years.

On Sunday afternoon musicians, vocalists and concert-goers come together to share a unique arts experience.

Every year close to 5,000 inmates are released from Kansas State Prisons. 99% of all men and women currently incarcerated will be returned to their communities. Activities like those provided by Arts in Prison offer the incarcerated outlets for positive expression, for success in pro-social projects and hope that there is a something better for them ahead. Arts in Prison founder, Elvera Voth believed that inmates are coming home and they could either return with hope in their heart or hate in their eyes. These concert experiences allow the inmates to forever let their spirits sing!

Let the East Hill Singers raise your hopes and celebrate the good in humanity through the magic of music.

Arts in Prison presents the Forever Let My Spirit Sing! a concert by the East Hill Singers, Sunday, April 29th at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 6306 Roe Ave, Prairie Village, KS 66208 and Sunday, May 6th at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St. Lawrence, KS 66044. An Art Exhibit and Sale begins at 3:00 and the concert begins at 4:00. It is free to the public. A good will offering will be taken.

###

For more information, comments or interviews, contact Leigh Lynch, Executive Director of Arts in Prison at leighl@artsinprison.org or 913-403-0229. A selection of inmate art will be on display and for sale. All proceeds go back to Arts in Prison to provide supplies for additional classes.
