Where You Can Help Animals in the Kansas City Area
If you are looking for a way to help others and give back to the community, you could consider volunteering at a local animal shelter. Animal shelters offer a safe haven to thousands of animals in need every year and help reunite countless lost pets to their families.
Listed below are four different animal shelters where you can adopt a pet or volunteer your time. Of course, this list is just a fraction of all the shelters in Kansas City so be sure to do your own research as well.
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City
The Humane Society has been around for over 100 years following through on their mission to rescue animals across the Kansas City area. They provide veterinary services, pet adoption and spay and neutering services.
They became the first no-kill shelter in the area and have rescued hundreds of sick and injured animals. And the Humane Society regularly hosts fun events, like their yearly one-mile Dog-n-Jog fun run.
Wayside Waifs is the largest no-kill animal shelter in the metro area. They provide shelter for animals with no home, a veterinary clinic, and they work to educate the community on animal safety. Wayside Waifs also hosts regular events like their annual adopt-a-thon where all pet adoptions are just $35.
Great Plains SPCA
The mission of Great Plains is threefold: prevention through high-volume spay and neutering; adoption from one of their two shelter locations; and retention through community improvement programs.
They provide behavior training programs to the animals in their care and support to the families of adopted pets. They also offer veterinary care and microchipping services.
Great Plains is a member of the Pet/Animal Coalition of Kansas, an advocacy group that works to help animals in the metro area.
KC Pet Project
The KC Pet Project works with Animal Control to ensure that more homeless pets are adopted and to reunite lost pets with their families. They also work to prevent unplanned litters and to educate the community on what responsible pet ownership looks like.
Their main pet shelter is located in Raytown but they also have two different adoption centers. One is located in Zona Rosa and the other is in the Petco store at 95th and Quivira in Overland Park. At the adoption centers, visitors can adopt a pet, have their pet microchipped, and purchase retail pet items.
