Location: Johnson County Community College Capitol Federal Conference Center

DEBATE-Kansas City (DKC) will hold a community event at Johnson County Community College (JCCC) entitled Educating Kansas: A Public Debate over Education Funding in the Sunflower State on Tuesday, February 9th from 7:00-8:30 PM. The debate will feature three sides, each represented by a current or former DKC student with a connection to Kansas. Event sponsors include: The Arthur N. Rupe Foundation, The National Speech and Debate Association, The Kansas City Star, KCUR, UMKC and JCCC.
“DEBATE-KC is providing the community access to a real and fair debate over a critically important and timely issue: how to best fund schools in Kansas. We will present three perspectives grounded in research,” said Gabe Cook, DKC’s Executive Director. “Our debate over school funds in Kansas will also contain arguments relevant to education funding in other states and nationally.”
The three positions in the debate will be: 1. Reverse the tax cuts & return to the previous Kansas school funding formula. 2. Keep the tax cuts and block grant school funding. 3. Revolution in the schoolhouse. The three debaters will be: Alex Trobough, a Sumner Academy senior with numerous national and state debate awards, Candace Villanueva, a Sumner Academy and JCCC graduate who was an award winning debater in high school and college and now works for JCCC and Kayla Gilmore, a sophomore at Emporia State that debated successfully in high school and college.

Tunes for T.A.R.A.: Musicians Unite for Homeless Animals

Date:
Time: 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Location: Boulevard Brewing Company
Price: $50
Category: Concert / Live Music
The Animal Rescue Alliance (TARA) is a nonpro t organization dedicated to helping homeless pets in the Greater Kansas City area. TARA is an all volunteer group which relies solely on adoption fees, donations, and sponsorships to continue our e orts. Although we have no paid staff , we have saved more than 2,100 dogs and cats since 2007.

We are excited about our upcoming fundraiser, the Third Annual Tunes for TARA: Musicians Unite for Homeless Animals. For the past two years, this has been our largest fundraiser, raising over $13,000 annually.

This year we expect a sellout crowd, raising even more money for the homeless animals we help through ticket sales and a silent auction at the event. We have reserved event space at an extremely popular local brewery, Boulevard Brewing Company.

On Friday, February 12, 2016, local musicians will donate their time to help us raise crucial funds needed in our work to end animal suffering. Boulevard beer and wine, live music, professionally catered heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a commemorative pint glass are included in the ticket price.
